Teddy Riley helped Michael Jackson step into a new decade. As the pioneer of new jack swing, Riley fused hip-hop rhythm with R&B melody, and that street-smart sound was exactly what Jackson wanted for Dangerous. Working with Jackson and Bill Bottrell after the Quincy Jones era had closed, Riley co-produced much of the 1991 album, giving tracks like 'Jam' and 'Remember the Time' a harder, more modern edge. He updated Jackson's music for a generation raised on rap without losing the pop instincts underneath. The collaboration proved Jackson could reinvent himself and stay current. Riley brought youth, swing, and a producer's ear for the moment, and Dangerous became a bridge between eras of Black music.
