Bruce Swedien

Bruce Swedien was the ears behind Michael Jackson's biggest records. A master recording engineer with a background stretching back to the golden age of studio craft, he worked closely with Quincy Jones and became a fixture on Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad, and beyond. Swedien had a scientist's obsession with sound: he chased clarity, depth, and punch, and developed his own methods for capturing Jackson's voice and the surrounding instruments. His mixes gave those albums their crisp, three-dimensional feel, sound that still leaps from the speakers. He treated engineering as an art, not a technical afterthought. Much of what listeners love about the sonic texture of Jackson's peak-era music runs through Swedien's hands and his uncompromising standards in the room.
